"Society in every state is a blessing, but government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil; in its worst state an intolerable one; for when we suffer or are exposed to the same miseries by a government, which we might expect in a country without government, our calamity is heightened by reflecting that we furnish the means by which we suffer."

Bogus "Solutions" to the Financial Crisis: The Latest in Junk Economics
It looks like bookstores are about to be swamped this summer and fall by a forest of advice for which publishers gave respectable advances a year ago as the economy was going off the rails. Seeking to minimize the risk of cognitive dissonance, the marketing strategy seems to be to offer advice by well-placed or celebrity insiders on how to recover the kind of free lunch that American pension plans – and popular hopes for easy wealth – have long assumed to be part of the natural law of economic growth, if only it can be better managed. The fantasy people want to buy is that the happy 1981-2007 era of debt-leveraged price gains for real estate, stocks and bonds can be brought back. But the Bubble Economy was so debt-leveraged that it cannot reasonably be restored. This means that publishers have achieved the marketer's dream of planned obsolescence: Readers a year or so from now will have to buy a new slew of books as they feel hungry again from the lack of intellectual protein.
Palin Vetoes Stimulus Energy Funds
Gov. Sarah Palin is at war with state lawmakers after vetoing their acceptance of $28.6 million in federal stimulus money for weatherization and renewable energy projects. Legislators said no other state has rejected the energy-cost money. Palin, who accepted the rest of the $930 million in stimulus money Alaska is eligible for, said the energy funds would have forced communities to adopt new building codes.

Dollar Decline Begins In Earnest as U.S. Deficits Climb
The dollar has likely begun its long term decline, say investment experts, who add that the risk to America’s investment grade rating could start a stampede away from greenback, devaluing the currency even faster. The dollar’s recent bottom was on March 4, right around the time of the stock market low, when it hit $1.23 to the euro. It now trades at $1.38 to the euro. It recently peaked at $1.44 on Dec. 17 of last year.
Wilbur Ross Starts Bank Buy Ups
The federal seizure of struggling Florida thrift BankUnited FSB is expected to cost the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. $4.9 billion, representing the second-largest hit to the FDIC's insurance fund since the financial crisis began felling banks last year. The costliest was last year's seizure of California lender IndyMac Bank, on which the bank insurance fund is estimated to have lost $10.7 billion.
U.S. Dollar In for Some Tough Months Ahead
Here are some of the recent factors that are starting to sour things for the dollar. GM is dumping 42 percent of its car dealers and Chrysler is dumping 25 percent of its dealers. Now, I’m sure Japan carmakers like Toyota, Honda, and Mazda love this. Since our biggest American icons are having such difficulties, it encourages money to look elsewhere for investment. As each passing day goes by, investors are reminded about how bad things are. This really hurts the sentiment out there and encourages “dollar investors” to take their money elsewhere.

Faulty and Superficial Study From Immigration Lawyers Lobby As an undergraduate economics major with one year to go, I am amazed at the amateurish analysis contained in a new study by an immigration lawyers group that contends that immigration rates in an area have no connection to unemployment, crime, drugs, robberies, and a total destruction of the overall moral in the area.
